AJAX File upload?

I've seen a File API in the works, I'm curious if anyone can clarify what needs completion spec wise before we can upload files via AJAX?

For clarification every single "solution" I've seen uses iframes or a plug-in like AJAX, I'm hoping someone more familiar with various specs could please shine some light on the subject.

I think this is supported already in XHR2 and at least Firefox.
