gradient element

Hi I want to layer text over the gradient element in my banner. I know it's easier to just add an image as a background to a div with text in it, but the purpose of this exercise is to utilise html5. I've put the element in a div, and tried various ways to layer text over. Is it just not possible to layer something over a html5 canvas?
