Last modified tag?

I think there should be a way to tell the useragent when the page was last modified. Is that already possible with HTTP headers or META tags or something like that?

If it isn't already possible, I think it would be a great feature to add, because I think that it is necessary for spiders to know. For example: I was searching for a recent article, but Google returned a result that was over 5 years old.
