Standby attribute on <object>

Do you think the HTML spec should do something differently? You can discuss spec feedback here, but you should send it to the WHATWG mailing list or file a bug in the W3C bugzilla for it to be considered.

Can anyone explain to me why this attribute was removed? It wasn't present in applet, and the function of putting alternate content or text within the object is different than the function of this attribute.

No, what is the browser supported equivalent? I can't seem to find that either.
And that question is sort of ironic because a lot of the features propsed in HTML 5 do not work in most of the mainstream browsers yet, some in Firefox, some more in Opera but the support is quite limited as of right now.
